Love Bar Harbor and Maine...

Sitting in a nice campground called Shady Oaks, in Orland/Bucksport, Maine.  It is a quiet, clean and well monitored campground (we don't think anyone will steal anything as the owners wouldn't let them!  Been for a swim, another lovely sunny day, and today, we stuck to our target of less km.  Only 68.5km, of which about 13 were going into town to investigate and get food, with no luggage on the bikes.

Bar Harbor was beautiful (if rather touristy).  Can certainly see why people go there for holidays.  63 places to eat in summer (only 3 in winter). I reckon we chose3 of the best while we were there. You CAN get good food if you pay the money, so we decided, what the hell.

The crab cakes, which are purely crab and no filler (like you get in Australia and NZ). Lobster again last night for me, far too much, swordfish for Peter. Tonight we are picnicking, on some wonderful food from the great
Maine supermarket Hannafords.

Yay photos worked today!!!

Coastal walkway around Bar Harbor where the 'summer cottages' are

Sand Bar that gives Bar Harbor it's name.  You can walk across it at low tide and hope you don't get stranded

Sandy Beach in Acadia National Park, Mt Desert, Maine (just out of Bar Harbor). Actually crushed Feldspar rock.  The bay is really cold 50F/10 degrees celsius, as it has arctic currents, at this time of the year

Beautiful rocky Maine Coast (this one is in the Acadia National Park)

US!!!! a rare photo of both of us, on the top of Mt Cadillac in Acadia National Park

Had to take this photo for Jackson.  'Beached as Bro'.  And yes, we had to go in and have a beer on your behalf!!!, well, on our behalf, you are only 13!!!

The star on the house.  This has perplexed us since we left Halifax.  One house we saw had 6 stars. I finally took this one in Surry, Maine.  But they are on houses everywhere we have been.  We debated whether they were jewish, whether there was symbolism.  On the ferry from Digby to St John, we talked to a resident of Nova Scotia (originally from Scotland, he came out to NZ in 1962 with the immigration, lived in Hamilton), and asked him about the stars.  He wondered too, and found out that they are only a 'decorator item'.  It is a trend!!!
The camping is great, really enjoying it.  Still no rain (yay!!! - 11 whole days).

While I've been typing this, Peter has been talking to a nice (not sure about sane....) man from Virginia. They live in their trailer here for 3 months of the year.  The special thing, is, he was pushing his pussycat 'Rusty' who was a sort of ginger tom, around in the cats enclosed pushchair. The cat lives indoors, and goes for walks in his pushchair,  pretty fat cat (and Dad for that matter!).  The RV's are amazing. I'm going to take some photos sometime of some of the set ups they have.  They go somewhere and stay all summer.  We asked some questions today and it costs between $5 and $10 a night for a site depending on what club you belong to.  Rusty's Dad just said that if he pays for the site for 3 months he can leave the trailer here all year, different lifestyle!

Well the rest of dinner awaits.  Love to you all Carey and Peter

  1. Love the Star!! Bet you knew that I would. The cats must be cute. I remember when we where in Paris seeing a cat and dog dressed up in bonnets in a pram. It sure made me giggle. You both look fab and love peter with facial hair.
Loves to you. Off to Mum's tomorrow.
